Build Your Home On A Budget

An architect-designed, custom-built house does not have to be extravagantly priced, according to most residential design architects. Of course, a custom-built house will be more expensive than a tract-built house because it is designed for a specific lot, orientation, views, location of neighbors, and the size and lifestyle of the household. However, by sacrificing unnecessary amenities, it is possible for buyers to afford a custom-built home on a limited budget.

First, architects recommend formulating a preliminary design and floor plan before deciding on materials or other details. Also, the house can be constructed in phases, first building the necessities or those amenities that are too difficult or costly to add later on, such as a wraparound porch. Since builders are better able to pinpoint actual construction costs, it is helpful for buyers to get builder feedback after the basic floor plan, roofline, and preliminary specifications are complete.

Not only can builders keep the project moving within the budget, they are also able to suggest ways for the buyers to get what they want at a lower cost, such as look-alike materials. Some architects suggest the buyers even purchase some of the supplies themselves – like paint, appliances, carpeting, and plumbing fixtures – to save money.
